About the artist
Linda Huffman is an internationally acclaimed artist,
cartoonist & educator (she has been an oil painter since 1969, a published
cartoonist since 1994 & in 2001, combined both careers into her love of kiln formed
glass). Linda's full biography can be viewed at http://www.huffmanstudios.com/full bio.htm. She has specialized in dichroic glass earrings, pendants,
Memory Pendants (cremation, memorial & keepsake jewelry) & has been
acclaimed as one of the top three dichroic glass artists on the west coast. She
is also an accomplished silversmith, however she prefers to use silver only as a
"frame" for her dichroic glass.
About the company
L. Huffman Studios was formed in 1992 as an outlet for her oil paintings & cartoons. Since 2001, the main focus has been her kiln formed dichroic glass jewelry. We are an artist owned & operated business in Everett, Washington with no mass produced product or catalog since each item is a one of a kind creation which has been hand designed, hand made and inspected by the artist. We sincerely believe in quality over quantity and offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee along with a lifetime guarantee to our customers and retail outlets on all of our workmanship against defects, however we will not honor neglect or misuse.
About the product
Dichroic glass is a special glass made in a high
temperature vacuum furnace, the glass is coated with vapors of exotic
metals through the use of a high powered electron gun. There can be as many as
60 layers of metals on each piece of glass.
The dichroic coating itself has
no color. The colors are created by light striking the coating on the glass. Each piece of dichroic glass has three colors associated with it: a reflected color, a transmitted color and a third reflective color that can be viewed at a 45-degree angle. This causes the glass to change color as the light hits it from different angles.
Linda creates her pendants & earrings by starting with a black or
iridized back, lays a "U" shaped piece of fine silver wire on the inside of the
back piece (the curved end of the wire sticks up approx. 3/16" past the top of
the back piece). She then hand cuts small pieces of dichroic glass & arranges
these on the back piece to create a design & then places a clear glass cap
on top creating a protective covering for the dichroic glass & also giving the
feeling of depth in the pendant & earrings. This is placed in a kiln which heats
up to 1500 degrees F for approximately 2 hours.
